Japanese Green Tea Is the New Coffee

348sMore and more people are switching to Japanese green tea and are giving coffee a miss. The trendiest one is matcha. Matcha is the powdered Japanese green tea used in the famous Japanese tea ceremony. It has a very ancient history since it was brought from China by the Zen monk Eisai. Matcha is obtained by stone-grinding a tea called tencha to produce a powder. Matcha Latte anyone?

In the cool neighborhoods of Berlin and London you can see green tea shops opening up left and right. One we really like is Mamecha in Berlin Mitte. Check it out.japan-in-berlin-japanfestival-2015-Mamecha-IMG_9208

Sunflower Bean – Refreshingly Old School

107__MG_4796The phrase ‘modern psychedelia’ often feels like an oxymoron, but on Human Ceremony Sunflower Bean make perfect sense of it, rewardingly broadening their musical horizons in the process and as with the Nuggets compilations it’s as diverse as you like yet retains a marvellous cohesion at the same time. TrendEngel will have the pleasure to see the band live in Berlin in a weeks time in legendary Kantine am Berghain – we will keep you posted – are they the saviors of rocknroll?

Crosstown Doughnuts – The Revelation

crosstown-doughnuts2Cupcakes is so yesterday – now it’s all about the doughnuts. Forget Krispy Kreme and Dunkin Donuts. The new gold standard is Crosstown Dougnuts. The London Donut-chain is baking some amazing sxxx.crosstowndougnuts-11

Their dough is a unique hybrid recipe created by combining sourdough (levain) and fresh bakers’ yeast. They make a variety of these sourdough doughnuts, some of which are filled, glazed or mixed with Belgian chocolate. Seriously, yum.crosstown-Doughnuts-2

Favourites include the chilli Belgian chocolate square doughnut – just sourdough with a chilli chocolate mousse injected, topped with a white chocolate glaze – the sea salt caramel with banana cream on a light chocolate sourdough, and the crème brûlée with velvety Tongan vanilla custard. However – the best one is probably the sea salt caramel and banana doughnut. crosstowndougnuts-18

Baskets – Louis C.K. and Zach Galifianakis Team Up

zach-galifianakis-tv-show-baskets-screenshotBaskets is a new show – let’s call it a sitcom that is created byLouis CK and Zach Galifanakis – about a wannabe clown called Baskets (Zach) and his struggle. The beauty of his show is that he presents us with deeply flawed characters in relatable (though comically exaggerated) scenarios. However, he always finds the humanity in people and his character is someone who is really trying to do his best, though failing miserably. Baskets is just a miserable failure who thinks that his problems are created by the world and rages at it in sad retaliation. You never feel his love for clowning as much as his hatred for everything else.

Vetements – THE Brand For Years to Come

6 19The label Vetements is the most radical thing to come out of Paris in over a decade. This is a bunch of crazy dudes. Demna Gvasalia is the head of a collective of 18 young fashion designers. The average age is early to mid-twenties. They speak roughly 13 languages between them – truly international. The brand was launched from Gvasalia’s Paris bedroom, the product of weekends and nights spent designing for the love of it. The antidote of Paris fashion. Almost rebellious – almost. Stores such as Dover Street Market in London carry the pieces. Most of the items are interchangeable for men and women. Anything goes. Gvasalia is now artistic director for Balenciaga. This is a bit of a surprise and worried some fans of Vetements. But don’t worry – Vetements will be stronger than ever and THE brand for years to come.25

Petite Miller – Bigger Than Gaga? – Barbaric

d9b8734d2be0d6c29c2b0748e75058e4It isn’t often that you hear of a pop star on the rise who is simultaneously pursuing a career in the spotlight and a master’s degree in philosophy from the Sorbonne, and yet Petite Meller is doing exactly that. Ambiguous in age and willfully obtuse when you try and pry, here is a Londoner (via Paris and New York), who is equal parts afro-electro chanteuse and psychoanalytic, post-structural Dionysian. Add the Godard inspired music videos, like recent single “Backpack,” plus a Lolita aesthetic to the mix, and the result is both painfully chic, and almost unbearably French. Her album will drop soon and the latest single is pretty damn good. Possibly better than Gaga. Pop at its best:
