12 in 12 – Die innere Ruhe finden

Jaja, schon gut. Wartet doch einen Augenblick.

Also,  zurück zum Onsen.

Crisis In Six Scenes – Woody Allen On TV

Crisis-In-Six-Scenes-750x400Woody Allen’s upcoming Amazon Studios series Crisis In Six Scenes takes a jaundiced look back at the 1960s or, perhaps, at the way people largely went about their lives ignoring the era’s vast social changes for as long as possible. That’s at least judging by the first look at the series, in which it’s firmly established that Woody Allen is incapable of looking like James Dean.
Along with Allen, Crisis In Six Scenes stars Miley Cyrus, Elaine May, Rachel Brosnahan, John Magaro, Michael Rapaport, Margaret Ladd, David Harbour, Joy Behar, Christine Ebersole, Becky Ann Baker, Lewis Black and Rebecca Schull. It premieres on Amazon September 30 and, as Allen confirmed earlier this year, will consist of only one season. The series will stream on Amazon in September.

Groundhog Day – Old Vic and Tim Minchin Mean Magic

groundhog-dayThis is the hottest ticket in town. The musical version of Groundhog Day (yes, the flick with Bill Murray), with music and lyrics by Tim Minchin, began previews at London’s Old Vic Theatre last week, Hard to imagine that the movie can be made in to a musical but let me assure you it can. TrendEngel had the chance to see the very first performance and it was fabulous. Standing ovation and happy faces all around. The musical at the Old Vic is a bit of a contradiction but this is not just fun but also intelligent and did I mention fun?

Tim Minchin and Andy Karl as Phil Connors. A match made in heaven.
Tim Minchin and Andy Karl as Phil Connors. A match made in heaven.

Hearts will melt and the songs of Tim Minchin, one of our favorite comedians and song writers will stay with you for a long time. It will soon be a cliche to say it: but this is a Groundhog Day you’ll be happy to relive time and again.

Vice Principals – Danny McBride is a Genius

vice_principals_s1_keyartWe love Danny McBride aka Kenny Powers. It was about time that he made his comeback. Eastbound and Down was one of the best comedies ever. Now we have Vice Principals. Pretty damn good as well. Dark in tone but light in premise, Vice Principals has Danny McBride’s unique brand of humor stamped all over it. Here he pairs magnificently with Walton Goggins, but despite the show’s title high school has very little to do with any of it. A workplace comedy with dark personal revelations along the way, this show features a character that could have easily been Eastbound and Down’s Kenny Powers – if the baseball star had never made it big. With its limited premise (and a limited episode/two-season commitment from McBride) the series draws laughs in the pilot thanks to quick banter and ridiculous situations. It’s a tone that carries through in subsequent installments, reminding us that sometimes it is fun to watch grown men act like children. At least for a little while.

Lady Dynamite – A Comedy Like No Other – Maria Bamford

90The divine and unusual comedian Maria Bamford has a brilliant new series, “Lady Dynamite,” premiering Friday on Netflix; as is often the case with comedians who front sitcoms, it has something to do with her actual life. But that is the only case here that is often the case.

Created by Mitchell Hurwitz and Pam Brady, it is cheerful, dark, surreal, profane, aspirational, meta-fictional and packed with people playing versions of themselves or other people entirely (or playing versions of themselves playing other people entirely); it plays with visual and verbal puns, with moods and acting styles and moves around in time and dimension. And while these are elements of many modern comedies – it owes something to “It’s Garry Shandling’s Show,” “Curb Your Enthusiasm,” “30 Rock,” “The Sarah Silverman Program,” Hurwitz’s “Arrested Development” and the cracked spirit of Adult Swim – I have never seen them assembled in quite this way, or with quite so much gusto.

Twin Peaks – The Full Cast List Revealed

welcome-to-twin-peaks-1200x628-facebook
The entire cast of the Twin Peaks revival has been revealed, with the announcement that new stars such as Monica Bellucci, Laura Dern and Jim Belushi are to join key original cast members.

While the return of Kyle MacLachlan, Mädchen Amick and Sherilyn Fenn had already been announced, a full list of all 217 cast members, published by the US cable channel Showtime, indicates that he will be rejoined by David Duchovny, Alicia Witt, David Patrick Kelly – who all had minor roles in the original series – and Harry Dean Stanton, who appeared in the big screen version, Twin Peaks: Fire Walk with Me .

2286The series, set 25 years after the story last ended, will apparently not include original cast members Lara Flynn Boyle (who played Donna Hayward) and Piper Laurie (who played Catherine Martell) when it airs next year.

New characters will be played by Naomi Watts, Tom Sizemore, Jessica Szohr, Amanda Seyfried, Matthew Lillard, Balthazar Getty, Hailey Gates, Michael Cera, Tim Roth , Ernie Hudson, Ashley Judd and David Koechner as well as the musicians Eddie Vedder, Sharon Van Etten and Trent Reznor.

Fans had already been excited by the announcement that David Lynch, who co-wrote the original, would return to the director’s chair he vacated after overseeing the critically acclaimed first season. And one more thing: Apparently it will be at least 2 new seasons of Twin Peaks. Can’t wait till 2017…

Dice – The King is Back – Andrew Dice Clay

dice-promo-640x0With Dice, Showtime’s new comedy series, Andrew Dice Clay attempts to create a vision of himself as both a private citizen and as the creator and maintainer of the stand-up comedy persona that made him such a global phenomenon in the 1980s and 90s. This would seemingly be in loosely same mold as shows like Louie and Maron, which allowed Louis C.K. and Mark Maron to mine not only the lives of skilled performers but also their distinct philosophies and perspectives. Where those shows dealt with a chaotic life in the midst of a unique career in a creative field, however, Dice deals with the struggles of settling down, less in terms of romantically than as a celebrity and, to a lesser extent, an artist.
This is a little gem of a TV show. Well done Dice. This is really cool.

The People Vs OJ Simpson – How Can It Be So Good?

17CRIMESTORY-master675The People v OJ Simpson, the first iteration of American Crime Story, the new anthology from Ryan Murphy, creator of American Horror Story, Glee and Scream Queens, doesn’t immediately hurl itself into the full frenzy of the OJ case. Exercising uncharacteristic restraint, Murphy — who merely produced and directs from a script by Scott Alexander and Larry Karaszewski — deftly depicts the relative calm before the eventual storm.

What he’s showing us is the beginning of the America we’re stuck with today. He’s showing us a world where Marcia Clark’s case was undermined by the constant media preoccupation with what she wore to court and how uptight she came across and why she couldn’t find a decent hair stylist.

A world where OJ’s blank beach bum houseguest Kato Kaelin became both a punchline and an instant celebrity. A world where Nicole Brown’s friend Faye Resnick parlayed her witness box exposure into a tell-all book and a Playboy cover. A world where Johnnie Cochrane used America’s racial divide to reshape the narrative of the case.
Funny enough – this is one of the greatest moments of American history. You don’t believe it? Watch The People Vs. OJ Simpson starring John Travolta and Cuba Gooding Jr among others – a stellar cast.
